Full Day Climbing Trip – Independence Monument
With climbing up to 5.9, this tower is perfect for the budding outdoor climber looking to start ticking off summits!
Tall and proud, Otto’s Route was climbed over 100 years ago by a true pioneer – following John Otto’s path to an incredible summit should be on everyone’s ticklist!
This is a fun climb with diverse climbing – cracks of all sizes, verticle sport climbing, an airy summit pitch, and a massive flat summit block to take in the views of the Colorado National Monument.

- Technical: 4 miles of hiking, 5.9 crack climbing, sport climbing, big exposure, 400ft of climbing over 4 pitches
Skill & Fitness Level
- Prior outdoor climbing experience is helpful but not mandatory
- Should be able to climb 5.9 outside or 5.10 indoors, but not mandatory
- Intermediate fitness level
What to Bring
- 3-4 liters of water
- Sun screen
- Lip balm
- Brimmed hat
- Light long-sleeve shirt (for sun protection)
- Sun glasses
- Light rain gear
- Camera
- Extra snacks if you get really hungry, are a growing teenager, or have dietary restrictions or allergies

- All of the high quality technical gear you will need for climbing*
*If you do have and would prefer to use your own climbing harness, shoes, and/or chalk bag, please do so. Otherwise, we provide these items for you.
What to Wear
- Running shoes or lightweight hiking shoes you are comfortable hiking 4 miles in
- No open-toed sandals, please
- Clothes that are light-weight and loose fitting to allow you flexibility and freedom of movement
- Clothes that are suitable for the season
