Heidi grew up in Chicago, where she first discovered rock climbing in Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin. It wasn’t until 2009, a decade later, that she began climbing at the Red River Gorge in eastern Kentucky. From that point on, she has committed herself to a lifestyle dedicated to the pursuit of world class rock climbing. She has lived and traveled all over the southeastern US, and has spent time in the Sierra Mountains of California. She started climbing in the Moab area in 2013 and has since fallen in love with the desert. Heidi first began working as a climbing guide in Tennessee in 2011, began guiding professionally in 2015, and joined the Moab Cliffs and Canyons team in 2016.

A native of New Jersey, John moved west when he became a student at Colorado College. After graduating with a B.A. in geology, he took up guiding to fulfill his love of teaching and to share the joy of climbing and the desert. John loves climbing for the places it takes him—so far ten states, three provinces and four continents, though he considers the desert southwest to be his favorite place in the universe.

Rock Climbing and Canyoneering Guide

Originally from Syracuse, New York, Dustin didn’t discover climbing until his college years. He immediately transferred from being a Physical Education Major to an outdoor program in New York’s Adirondack Range to pursue an outdoor lifestyle. After taking courses in rock climbing, paddling, and skiing, including a semester with the International Wilderness Leadership School, he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Expeditionary Studies.These years would take him on climbing trips all over the United States and Mexico.

Afterwards, he worked in Alaska as a rock climbing and mountaineering guide before moving to Alta, Utah to ski the winter season.  Shortly after moving to Utah, he visited Moab and fell in love with its endless climbing options.

Dustin joined the Cliffs and Canyons team in 2014, allowing him to share his passion for the outdoors and help others experience its wonders.

Rock Climbing & Canyoneering Guide

Joe grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and learned to climb on weekend excursions to the Red River Gorge during high school. Joe visited Moab on his first ever climbing road trip in 2002, and his passion for exploring and climbing in the desert has only grown since then.

Joe has guided climbing, canyoneering, mountaineering, and backpacking trips for over 12 years in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming. He worked as a field instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) for three spring-through-fall seasons, climbing and living out of his van between courses and spending winters in Jackson, Wyoming.

Joe has a PhD in Earth Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. From pointing out micro-faults and calcite veins to discussing petrified sand dunes and the breakup of Pangaea, his background in geology enhances any trip.

Joe has climbed the Nose of El Capitan in a day (Yosemite) and the Grand Traverse of the Teton Range in a day. His technical expertise and patient, calm demeanor will allow you to expand your comfort zone in a safe environment. Joe started guiding at Cliffs and Canyons in 2014. Rock Climbing & Canyoneering Guide

Chris began climbing and skiing in the mountains of Idaho, near his childhood home. Since leaving Idaho, Chris has traveled from California to Colorado in pursuit of exceptional rock climbing, and is now planning his first international expedition to the Cordillera Blanca range in Peru.

He has spent most of his time in the front range of the rugged Rocky Mountains in Colorado, exploring areas like Rocky Mountain National Park and Eldorado Canyon. From one type of sandstone to another, Chris is now thrilled to call Indian Creek his home crag.

Chris is not only an accomplished climber but very passionate about education. He originally attended a traditional university in pursuit of an education degree with an emphasis on biology until leaving school in 2009 to pursue a career in climbing and guiding.

Chris joined Moab Cliffs and Canyons team in 2014, and looks forward to making your next desert adventure a truly unforgettable experience.

Operations Manager, Rock Climbing & Canyoneering Guide

Evan fell in love with moving over stone as a child in North Carolina. After attending high school in Vermont, he quickly moved west to Colorado and earned his first degree in Outdoor Leadership from Colorado Mountain College, logging many days in the mountains in the process. He joined the Cliffs and Canyons team in 2014 with over a decade and a half of demonstrated field-based expertise in leading, directing, and caring for small groups in wilderness settings. His thorough experience shaped his proven ability to maintain high safety standards under constantly changing and difficult circumstances. He has managed and directed every sort of outdoor program from therapeutic wilderness programs to high-end luxury resort adventures.

Evan is an AMGA certified climbing instructor as well as a ski guide aspirant. He spent time as an EMT in Moab, is part of Grand County’s Search and Rescue Winter Rescue Team, and even found time to attend Colorado Mesa University and earn a second degree in Environmental Science.
He has spent over a thousand days in the field and has climbed and snowboarded peaks in the Andes, Asia, Europe, New Zealand, Canada and Alaska, including Denali. Evan is always excited to be playing outdoors and truly strives to provide our guests with their best adventure ever.

Riley has always been an avid outdoorsman, beginning with his childhood adventures in Mississippi around the forests and swamps of his homeland.

It wasn’t until his late teens that he discovered the mountains and desert. Riley soon became consumed with backpacking, fly-fishing, skiing, canyoneering and rock climbing.

Soon after completing school and moving to Denver, CO to work as a landscape architect, he realized that working behind a computer screen for 50+ hours a week wasn’t for him.  In 2010 Riley moved to Tahoe, CA to work full-time in the climbing/skiing industry.

Since then he has lived, worked and traveled throughout the U.S., Europe, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and South America pursuing the hobbies that motivate him.  Riley is a lifelong adventurer who enjoys getting out of his comfort zone while pushing his physical and mental limits.  He has been encouraging our clients at Cliffs and Canyons to do the same since he joined our team at Cliffs and Canyons in 2014.

Executive Director, Rock Climbing & Canyoneering Guide

Brett possesses an obvious passion for both rock climbing and exploring the deepest recesses of this amazing desert landscape.

Wanting to share his enthusiasm, he opened Moab Cliffs and Canyons in 1999 and since then has introduced hundreds of people to the thrill of vertical play. A native Utahn, he began rock climbing more than 25 years ago in the Wasatch and Wind River Mountains and has subsequently established many routes throughout his home state.

Brett moved to Moab in 1985 and began his adventure career as a commercial raft guide, logging thousands of commercial river trip miles while working on 20 rivers in Utah, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Russia, Mexico, and Argentina/Chile.  A kayaking obsession quickly grew, culminating with dozens of Class V descents on many of the classic rivers of the western U.S. and Mexico.

Concurrently, he worked as a mountain bike guide when the sport was still in its infancy, founded a bike touring company and pioneered a handful of trips that are now common for more than a dozen companies operating today.

Since 1995, Brett has been a contractor developing and coordinating large vertical adventure programs for an international travel and adventure firm in remote areas around the world including; Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, Russia, Czech Republic, Mexico, Dominican Republic and elsewhere. His extensive experience on the rock has also made him a sought after technical rock rigger, stuntman, and location scout resulting in his work on more than 30 film/photo productions.

The consummate adrenaline junkie and desert factoid master, he is also an expert telemark skier, adventure racer and dirt biker.

Originally from western New York, Chris began climbing in 1993. He has climbed throughout North America and South America.

Chris has also worked extensively as a whitewater raft guide and is a seasoned kayaker and mountaineer. Additionally, he has logged thousands of sea miles as a licensed captain and professional sailor. On top of that, he has also worked in the field of wilderness therapy, designing and leading courses for challenged and disadvantaged youth and their families.

Chris has a passion for exploring the wild places of the world and sharing these experiences with others. Chris’ passion, patience and infectious smile always add to the amazing trips he has guided for Cliffs & Canyons since 2009.

Originally from Sweden, Mia is not opposed to traveling far and wide in search for outdoor adventures. She has worked in the outdoor industry since 1993, teaching and guiding everything from rock and ice climbing to desert and winter survival.

The Utah desert holds a very special place in her heart, and she loves to share this unique environment with all its beauty to those who come here, whether it is on a canyoneering trip or a rock climbing adventure.

Her enthusiasm, vast local knowledge and strong technical skills make her a popular guide. She has worked at Cliffs and Canyons for three years.

Mia is committed to the guiding lifestyle and to continuing her education in the field. She is actively involved in the American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) and has taken several courses in the different guiding disciplines. She has climbed extensively at the granite crags in Colorado and California, on the sandstone cliffs in the Utah desert, and traveled to both France and Thailand for limestone exploration.

Mia is also an avid skier, ice climber and mountaineer. She has been to the summit of Mt Whitney, The Grand Teton, Mt Rainier, and on an all women’s expedition to Denali in Alaska. She has also been on an expedition to climb Cho Oyu in Tibet. She has ice climbed throughout United States and Canada. During the winter months, she guides snowcat skiing and ice climbing in Colorado.
