The Take the Lead Ladies! Course Description:

Join professional climbers Pamela Shanti Pack and Gisely Ferraz for our Women’s Crack Climbing Clinic in Indian Creek, UT — one of the world’s premiere crack climbing destinations. In this intensive clinic, Pamela and Gisely will introduce you to basic through advanced crack climbing techniques, from tips to chimneys, with the objective of preparing you to take the lead. We will maintain a maximum 3:1 ratio so you will receive plenty of individual attention.

The first full day of climbing will be devoted to honing your crack climbing techniques on all sizes of cracks from tips to chimneys. On day two, after a thorough discussion of gear and gear placements, we will put your newfound skills into context as we devote the entire day to mock-leading on Indian Creek’s sustained cracks. Mock-leading is an excellent way to advance your crack climbing techniques as well as prepare you for the transition to leading. The emphasis on this course will be mock leading. However, your guides will assess your performance and you may be given the option to lead. If so, we will provide the gear and instruction you need to safely lead a pitch with a guide instructing from a fixed line next to you the entire pitch evaluating your gear placement.

The Women’s Indian Creek Crack Climbing Clinic invites ALL women. Our goal is to create a safe, inclusive space built on a foundation of respect and trust that promotes a healthy learning environment with a group of like-minded women.

The course officially begins Friday at 5pm  in Indian Creek. Enjoy two full days of climbing with Pamela and Gisely. Food and water will not be provided so be sure to bring enough of each for the duration of the clinic as we will be camping in the remote and beautiful Indian Creek area.

Our emphasis throughout the clinic will be learning through climbing after we demonstrate appropriate techniques. Over the course of the two-day clinic we will break down into small groups based on skill levels and individual needs. We will cover the following topics:

GUIDES

Pamela has spent over a decade as a professional climbing athlete. She has been seeking out North America’s most challenging inverted and vertical style offwidth climbs since 2008. She was the first woman in the world to climb and onsight 5.13 offwidth. She also received the prestigious Golden Piton Award in 2009 for establishing the 5.13 offwidth roof Gabriel in Zion National Park, which remains a global test piece. Subsequently, Pamela has spent the last decade establishing demanding routes throughout the American West with over 300 first ascents. Establishing new routes requires expertise in all styles of climbing as well as the art of establishing drilled anchors, evaluation of hazards, route cleaning as well as hard aid. She is currently focused on rare repeats and advancing her aid climbing skills. Pamela established the Art of Offwidth Clinics in 2019 and guides them biannually.

Pamela will be co-instructing with Gisely Ferraz, also known as ‘G’ or @brazilianclimbergirl on social media. Climbing has been a consistent passion that has shaped Gisely’s life for 25 years. Gisely was a competitive sport climber in her home country of Brazil in her early 20s and one of the first women to climb 5.13 in Brazil. She excels at sport climbing and trad climbing. Gisely has traveled and climbed throughout the world. Learning how to crack changed her life as she acquired the skills to pursue her dreams of climbing El Captain, Half Dome and Fitz Roy in Patagonia. After losing her partner, Ken Anderson, in a climbing accident in Squamish in 2019, Gisely has used climbing as a tool for therapy and resilience. Gisely has established multiple offwidths, including first female ascents to the rim in Indian Creek, under Pamela’s mentorship and has co-guided the prestigious Art of Offwidth Clinics with Pamela for the last four years.

We will have additional desert offwidth masters working with us in order to maintain a 3:1 ratio.

Cancellation Policy – Please read carefully:

A 50% deposit is required to reserve your space in this clinic. The remaining balance is due 30 days before the start of the clinic.

Because a reservation guarantees space in a clinic, we sometimes have to turn others away for those same dates. Thus, our cancellation policy for this clinic is as follows: Cancellations must be made at least 61 days prior to the trip dates in order to receive a full refund of the reservation deposit. If you cancel within 31-60 days of the clinic, it will result in loss of 50% of the deposit. If you cancel within 30 days of the clinic, it will result in loss of the full reservation payment. Please consider purchasing Trip/Vacation Insurance if you have concerns.

WEATHER

The ethic in the desert is not to climb on wet sandstone because it can damage the rock, and the accepted practice is to wait a full day to climb once the rock becomes saturated. We can and will work around non-saturating rain. If you can arrange to stay for one to two days beyond the length of the Clinic, we will climb those one to two days in the event of rain. This event is rain or shine. In the case of rain, we will do our best to find dry rock or we will teach concepts and skills on the ground in addition to going out for an additional day(s) past the clinic dates if weather allows.
